Spiral Wound Gaskets: Types, Materials & Selection Guide

A semi-metallic sealing solution built by alternately winding a V-shaped metal strip with a soft filler. Engineered for Class 150–2500 flanges and temperatures from −200 °C to 1000 °C — trusted in refineries, power plants, chemical and LNG facilities.

1. Classification by Structure

The correct type depends on your flange design, pressure class and service conditions. Below are the six standard configurations supplied as standard or made to order.

Type A

Basic Type (Winding Only)

Consists of the spiral winding element only — no inner or outer ring. Designed for male–female and tongue-and-groove flanges, typically in smaller sizes and lower pressure ratings.

Type B

With Outer Ring

The outer centering ring aligns the gasket on the bolt circle and prevents blowout. This is the most widely used type for raised face flanges and general industrial service.

Type C

With Inner & Outer Ring

The inner ring acts as a compression stopper, reduces turbulence and filler erosion, and improves stability. Preferred for high-pressure, high-temperature and vacuum service.

Type D

Heat Exchanger Type

Custom shapes and dimensions engineered to match heat exchanger shells, channels and tube-sheet flanges in petrochemical and refinery units.

Type E

Nuclear Grade

Manufactured with high-purity materials under strict quality control and full traceability, for nuclear power plant applications where reliability is absolutely critical.

Type F

Non-Round / Special Shape

Oval, rectangular, square, obround and other custom geometries for non-standard flange connections, manways and special equipment.

Comparison of spiral wound gasket structure types
Type Structure Flange Face Typical Service
Basic Type Winding only Male–female / Tongue-and-groove Small size, low pressure
With Outer Ring Winding + outer ring Raised face General purpose, most common
With Inner & Outer Ring Winding + inner + outer ring Raised face High pressure, high temperature, vacuum
Heat Exchanger Type Custom geometry Exchanger flanges Refinery & petrochemical units
Nuclear Grade High-purity materials Nuclear service flanges Nuclear power plants
Non-Round Type Oval / rectangular / square Non-standard flanges Special equipment connections

2. Classification by Material

Material selection defines the operating envelope of the gasket. The metal strip provides strength and elastic recovery; the filler provides sealing ability. Match both to your medium, pressure and temperature.

Metal Strip Options

  • SS304 / SS316 / SS316L — general purpose, steam, water, oil; SS316L for acids and chlorides
  • SS321 — high-temperature service with good thermal stability
  • Monel — seawater, hydrofluoric acid and reducing environments
  • Inconel — extreme high temperature and oxidizing media
  • Hastelloy — highly corrosive acids, alkalis and solvents

Filler Material Options

  • Graphite — the workhorse filler for steam, oil and hydrocarbons; up to 450 °C in oxidizing, 1000 °C in inert atmospheres
  • PTFE — chemical resistance for acids, alkalis and solvents; up to 260 °C
  • Ceramic — high-temperature and aggressive media; up to 1000 °C
  • Mica — excellent for high-temperature oxidizing service; up to 900 °C
  • Non-Asbestos Fiber — economical general-purpose option

Medium-to-Material Selection Matrix

Medium / Condition Recommended Metal Strip Recommended Filler
Water, steam, oil SS304, SS316 Graphite
Acid, alkali, solvent SS316L, Hastelloy PTFE
High temperature SS321, Inconel Ceramic, Mica
Cryogenic service SS304, SS316 PTFE, Graphite
General purpose SS304, SS316 Non-asbestos
Selection tip: Always confirm the flange standard and face type first (ASME B16.5, B16.47, DIN, EN, JIS or BS). Then verify pressure class, operating temperature and thermal cycling before locking in the material combination.

3. Key Product Specifications

Standard and custom specifications available. If you are unsure which combination fits your application, our engineering team can recommend the right configuration based on your medium, pressure and temperature.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Common technical and purchasing questions from engineers and buyers.

Q. What is the difference between a spiral wound gasket and a ring joint gasket?

Spiral wound gaskets are semi-metallic, using a spiral winding with filler, and are used on raised face flanges. Ring joint gaskets are solid metal rings for RTJ flanges under high pressure. They serve different flange types and pressure ranges.

Q. What is the maximum temperature of a spiral wound gasket?

It depends on the filler: graphite up to 450 °C in oxidizing atmospheres and 1000 °C in inert ones; PTFE up to 260 °C; ceramic up to 1000 °C; mica up to 900 °C.

Q. Can spiral wound gaskets be reused?

No. They are designed for single use. Reusing a spiral wound gasket may cause leakage and safety risks.

Q. What is the difference between SS304 and SS316?

SS316 has better corrosion resistance than SS304, especially in chloride and acid environments. It is often preferred for chemical and marine applications.

Q. How do I choose inner and outer rings?

An inner ring is recommended for high pressure, high temperature and vacuum service. An outer ring is used for raised face flange centering. Ring material should match or be compatible with the flange material.

Q. What is the lead time and MOQ?

Standard sizes ship in 3–7 days; custom sizes take 7–15 days. MOQ is flexible and small trial orders are accepted. Free samples are available for standard sizes.
